PRE- AND POST-MEETING WORKSHOPS

Pre-Meeting Workshops: August 13

2. Using Small Unmanned Systems in Volcanology (Aka “The Drone Workshop”)

Registration Cost/participant: $85

Workshop conveners/affiliations/emails:
Einat Lev, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory; einatlev@ldeo.columbia.edu
Christopher Hamilton, University of Arizona; hamilton@lpl.arizona.edu
Mike James, Lancaster University; m.james@lancaster.ac.uk

Description of workshop:
The use of small, unmanned aerial systems (UASs) is quickly gaining popularity in volcanology. This workshop, designed for current and prospective UAS users, will build on this excitement and cover topics including:

  1. Image acquisition platforms
  2. Before and during data collection: regulations, certification and permitting, campaign optimization, ground control and image network design, remote field logistics
  3. After the field campaign: Data processing (including a hands-on processing exercise)
  4. Moving beyond the visible image: using UASs for physical sample collection, thermal/multi/hyper spectral imaging, plume/ash/gas sampling

Requirements of participants:
Participants should bring a laptop and charger, with a pre-installed demo version of PhotoScan Pro, by Agisoft. The software can be downloaded at:
http://www.agisoft.com/downloads/request-trial/
Note: The trial license is valid for 30 days. Participants should install the software close to the workshop date, to avoid license expiration.

Participant application process:
The workshop is capped at 25 participants. Priority will be given to early career scientists and graduate students. In the registration form, please indicate any past experience with photogrammetry, remote sensing, and aerial or submarine data acquisition, as well as intended applications and use of the skills and knowledge gained at the workshop.
