3.  Numerical Modeling with OpenFOAM for Volcanological Applications

Registration Cost/participant: $85

Workshop conveners/affiliations/emails:

Description of workshop:
Numerical modeling is commonly used in volcanology for simulating a wide range of processes characterizing both effusive and explosive eruptions. OpenFOAM is an open-source computational fluid dynamics toolbox that has recently begun to be applied to problems in volcanology, with built-in meshing tools and solvers for multiphase fluids, particles, and thermodynamics. With the growing interest within the IAVCEI community and the generic, customizable utility of the OpenFOAM platform, we will host a workshop to learn, share and discuss numerical modeling of volcanic processes in OpenFOAM. The workshop will include an introduction to OpenFOAM, hands-on tutorials, and presentations on applications from participants and conveners.

This offering is not approved or endorsed by OpenCFD Limited, the producer of the OpenFOAM software and owner of the OPENFOAM® and OpenCFD® trade marks.

Requirements of participants:
Participants should bring laptops. After registration, we will provide the participants with instructions on how to install OpenFOAM that will work on all systems.

Participant application process:
A maximum number of 25 participants with priority given to early career scientists and students. Familiarity with CFD modeling and Unix/Linux is necessary. In the registration, we will need to know for which purpose people are interested in OpenFOAM.
