A note from the Program Committee

The overarching theme of IAVCEI 2017 is integrative studies of volcanism; for this reason we encourage submission of technical session proposals that will promote discussion not only within, but also between disciplines. Additionally, following on from the IAVCEI part of IUGG 2015, we encourage session proposals from early career scientists, including PhD students, as long as they enlist a more senior co-convenor. Below we suggest themes for the meeting that will serve as organizing strands for the program. Examples of the kind of integrative topics that we envision are included as subheadings.

1. Magmatism and tectonism
   EX: When plumes and continents collide
   
2. Using geophysics and geochemistry to probe magmatism and eruption processes
   EX: Reconciling chemical and physical views of magmatic systems
   
3. From melt to rock
   EX: The illusion of equilibrium … volcanism as snapshots of dynamic systems
   
4. From precursors to eruption
   EX: Combining geophysical, geochemical and geological insight to inform predictions
   
5. Volatile influences on eruption style, degassing, atmospheric chemistry and climate
   EX: The chemistry and physics of ash formation, transport and sedimentation
   
6. Insights from multi-disciplinary case studies
   EX: Orbits and rovers… merging insights from terrestrial and planetary volcanism
   
7. Evaluating volcanic hazards
   EX: Comparative volcanology... learning from volcano analogues; uniqueness vs. generalities
   
8. Volcanoes, energy and resources
   EX: From active to dormant to extinct... what controls the life cycles of volcanoes, and temporal distribution of resources?
   
9. Volcanoes and human societies
   EX: New approaches to volcanic risk assessment
   
10. Future thinking - what's on the horizon that could be a game-changer?
    EX: Real-time monitoring (including crowd-sourced data)
